Dr. William O’Brien is a Professor in the Construction Engineering and Management Program (CEPM) in the Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering Department at the University of Texas at Austin. He also serves as the Area Coordinator for the CEPM program and the Director for Center for Construction Industry Studies, the research arm of the construction program.
Dr. O’Brien is Co-Editor-in-Chief of Advanced Engineering Informatics, Specialty Editor of the Journal of Computing in Civil Engineering, recently served as Chair of the ASCE Computing Division Executive Committee, and sits on the Fiatech Board of Advisors.
The impact of this work has been recognized with sustained funding by industry and government, with major grants from the National Science Foundation, National Institute of Standards and Technology, Construction Industry Institute, Fiatech, and the Texas Department of Transportation. Recently his research in Advanced Work Packaging was used as a basis by the Construction Industry Institute to designate AWP as a “Best Practice. ” AWP, when implemented well, has been shown to increase productivity by 25% and reduce project cost by 10%.
